Why is it called ‘Indian’ tonic water?
In the early 19th century, British soldiers stationed in India were given soda or tonic water mixed with quinine powder, made by the local medical helpers to prevent and treat malaria. So the name came from its ‘birthplace’ and spread worldwide as ‘Indian tonic’. The quinine itself was too bitter at the time, so they sweetened its taste with gin, this is how gin-tonic was born.
