What is cola made of?
Cola is a carbonated soft drink which is mostly flavoured with vanilla, cinnamon and citrus oils. Most colas also contain caffeine originally sourced from the kola nut – where the name is coming from – but colas produced nowadays are rarely made from the kola nut. The soft drink became world famous when John Stith Pemberton, an American pharmacist, invented Coca-Cola in 1886 and created the recipe followed and copied by everyone. Modern-day colas mainly consist of the following ingredients: carbonated water, sugar or other sweeteners (depending on the type), caramel (which gives the dark colour of the cola), caffeine, phosphoric acid and different types of natural flavours. The detailed list and formula of the latter are still a highly kept secret at Coca-Cola.
